Veolia Water Technologies will deliver a suite of sustainable wastewater treatment solutions for Mölnlycke’s new glove manufacturing plant in Malaysia. The implementation of Veolia’s technologies will enable Mölnlycke, a world-leading medical products and solutions company, to strengthen its water recovery efforts and discharge effluent in an environmentally safe manner.

As part of the company’s sustainability strategy, Mölnlycke is working to integrate a green mindset across all aspects of their business. The manufacturing process of Mölnlycke's gloves involves repeated cycles of heating and cooling, requiring large quantities of energy and water during production. To address this, the manufacturer is developing a comprehensive roadmap to reduce its carbon footprint and to boost efficient use of resources. This includes the incorporation of innovative solutions at Mölnlycke’s new glove manufacturing facility in Kulim, Malaysia, that will place the company in good stead to attain the LEED® green building certification for this new site.

Veolia supplied a complete wastewater treatment solution comprising three proprietary technologies — the AnoxKaldnes™ Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor (MBBR), Idraflot™ Dissolved Air Flotation (DAF), and Multiflo™ clarifier. The combination of these proprietary and state-of-the-art technologies from Veolia will enable Mölnlycke to achieve highly purified effluent quality, as well as increase water recovery and reuse — all within a relatively small footprint.

“The collaboration went very well and we are extending our partnership to all our sites in Malaysia with Veolia,” said Jean-Christophe Guillou, Vice-President for Global Operations and Sourcing, Gloves, Mölnlycke. “Through this partnership we are exploring new solutions to meet our water recycling target, which is 60% of our wastewater streams in the next 2 years.”

The project will also include Veolia’s full services bundle that encompasses 24/7 maintenance, Hubgrade digital monitoring services as well as a tailored Hydrex® chemical conditioning program.

The Kulim site will expand Mölnlycke’s glove manufacturing capacity by 60% and help meet the growing demand for its Biogel® gloves. In addition to production lines, the facility will include an office building, which also houses their R&D offices and laboratories.

Olivier Estienne, Country Director, Malaysia for Veolia Water Technologies, concluded: “Veolia is firmly committed to becoming the world’s leading champion of ecological transformation. We strive to partner with companies in their quest to establish sustainable solutions, reduce their environmental footprint and limit the impact of their activities on resources. Mölnlycke has demonstrated that they think about the long-term effects of their actions and we are proud to be part of their expansion plans in Malaysia. We look forward to further opportunities to support them in reaching both their sustainability and performance goals.”
