Wednesday, May 26, 2021

Covenant Health and Bangor Nursing & Rehabilitation Center are excited to announce that they have signed a definitive agreement to proceed with the acquisition of Bangor Nursing & Rehabilitation Center by Covenant Health. This announcement follows nearly 10 years of successful collaboration and partnership between the two not-for-profit healthcare organizations. Final approval of the agreement is pending review by the Department of Health and Human Services for the State of Maine.

“This is great news for our community and the residents we serve,” says Nichi Farnham, president of Bangor Nursing & Rehabilitation Center’s community-led board of directors. “Joining Covenant Health will give us greater access to operational resources and supplies, clinical expertise and best practices developed across Covenant Health’s three hospitals and 12 skilled nursing and senior living facilities. Our long history of success working together was a major factor in our board’s decision to be formally acquired by Covenant Health.”

“Covenant Health and its affiliate Hospital, St. Joe’s, have been a long-standing community partner of the City of Bangor in tackling many community health related issues such as substance use disorder,” says Bangor City Council Chair, Dan Tremble. “We welcome the expansion of Covenant Health in the community through the acquisition of Bangor Nursing and Rehab. Its expansion in the Bangor region further strengthens our relationship and ability to address important health issues affecting the community.”

Covenant Health has successfully provided management services through a formal agreement with Bangor Nursing & Rehabilitation Center since 2013. During this time, the facility has earned above-average ratings for quality and staffing from the Centers for Medicaid and Medicare Services (CMS). Covenant Health has earned a reputation for being an innovative, Catholic healthcare system with facilities from New England to Pennsylvania. St. Joseph Healthcare in Bangor is a member of Covenant Health.

“Bringing Bangor Nursing and Rehabilitation Center into our Covenant Health family is a natural next step in our relationship,” explains Covenant Health President/CEO Stephen J. Grubbs. “Both organizations have a long legacy of providing high quality care for our communities. This association will ensure that residents of communities in Penobscot County have access to the best possible skilled nursing and rehabilitation services regardless of age, health status or faith background. We are truly excited to see what the future holds for both of our organizations.”

Prior to this announcement, Bangor Nursing & Rehabilitation Center was the only independent not-for-profit nursing home in Penobscot County. Under the terms of the acquisition Bangor Nursing & Rehabilitation Center will become a sponsored member of Covenant Health and will continue to operate as a not-for-profit organization with guidance from its community-led board of directors.
