HealthSouth and Mount Carmel Health System forms joint venture to build Inpatient Rehabilitation Hospital in Westerville, Ohio

Thursday, June 18, 2015

HealthSouth has formed a joint venture with Mount Carmel Health System to construct a 60-bed rehabilitation hospital in a suburb of Columbus, Ohio.

The 60,000-square-foot facility is expected to create 100 jobs and will accommodate patients who have experienced a stroke, trauma, brain and orthopedic injuries, among others.

Construction of the project is expected to begin late this year, and Columbus-based Mount Carmel Health System will relocate its 24-bed rehabilitation hospital to the new facility when construction completes in late 2017.

HealthSouth (NYSE: HLS) has been busy expanding its footprint outside of Alabama in 2015. Just last week, the Birmingham-based provider of rehabilitation services acquired Texas-based Reliant Hospital Partners for $730 million.

The company also announced plans earlier this year to purchase a hospital in Kentucky and partner on a new facility in Tennessee.

"We look forward to working collaboratively with Mount Carmel in developing the new inpatient rehabilitation hospital to serve the needs of the residents of central Ohio," said Barbara Jacobsmeyer, president of the central region for HealthSouth. "We are excited about the joint venture between HealthSouth and Mount Carmel Health System and the value it will bring to this community."
