Hospital breaks ground on $65M expansion of Gibbs Cancer Center at Pelham

Wednesday, May 18, 2016

Cancer survivor Skipper Brawley of Spartanburg was happy to brave the rain Tuesday to attend the groundbreaking for the new Gibbs Cancer Center & Research Institute facility.

“I just want to contribute to the cancer center,” the 76-year-old retired physician said. “They’re loving, professional, caring people.”

Brawley was among the large group of doctors, hospital employees, families and friends of cancer survivors who were at the ceremony for the seven-story addition to the Gibbs Cancer Center in Greer. The center is located on the Pelham Medical Center campus on Highway 14.

Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System’s new $65 million facility will be a world-class cancer treatment and research center when it opens in mid-2018, officials said. It will be accessible to 5 million people within a 100-mile radius of Pelham Medical Center.

“This is about cancer care, our future and our survivors and our families,” said David Church, vice president of oncology and support services at Spartanburg Medical Center. “The cancer center will serve generations to come and further our mission as a community and academic cancer and research center.”

“Hope you never have to use it. Expect you will,” said Jimmy Gibbs, one of the featured speakers and backers of the center.

The Gibbs Center’s director, Dr. Timothy Yeatman, said the focus will be “on the needs of the patient and family” and on becoming a cancer research center that “will be the pride of South Carolina,” able to "attract the best physicians and scientists.”

Dr. Julian Josey, Gibbs Center radiation oncologist and campaign co-chair, said years of patience are paying off.
