Phoenix Children's Hospital breaks ground on $60 Million project

Wednesday, December 09, 2015

Phoenix Children’s Hospital broke ground today on a $60 million project that will include a $40 million emergency department and a Level 1 pediatric trauma center.

The center will accommodate 100,000 patients, up from PCH’s existing capacity of 22,000 patients.

More than 83,000 patients walked through the doors in the last year, creating a need to get this project done quickly. It is scheduled to open in late 2017.

The expanded ED and trauma center will offer 75 private exam rooms — more than tripling current capacity — and will increase the number of trauma bays from four to nine so that surgeons can treat multiple trauma patients simultaneously.

Bob Meyer, president and CEO of PCH, said phase one has been paid for with philanthropic dollars.

A $40 million capital campaign kicked off with a $10 million gift from the Kemper and Ethel Marley Foundation, the largest single donation ever received by the hospital.

Other donors include Pediatric Surgeons of Phoenix, Freeport-McMoRan Copper and Gold Foundation, Thunderbirds Charities, Sioles Family Foundation, Executive Council Charities, Susan and Michael L. Ebert, Burkey Family Foundation, Margaret T. Morris Foundation, Phoenix Suns Charities, Apollo Education Group Inc., Carol and Larry Clemmenson, The Globe Foudnation and Arizona Public Service Co.

The project team for the new ED and trauma center includes Hobbs + Black Architects as project architect and Kitchell as general contractor.

This project is in addition to the opening of the ninth floor of PCH’s 11-story patient tower, adding 48 more beds to its existing 385 beds on the Phoenix campus at 20th Street and Thomas Road.

When the tower opened in 2011, its top three floors were shelled and reserved for future growth. This makes PCH the sixth largest children’s hospital in the U.S.

The 42,302-square-foot project will more than double the size of its existing space of 18,600 square feet.

This expanded space comes at a time when Arizona's pediatric population is expected to grow to 1.5 million by 2030, up from 1 million today.

For the second time, PCH was named to The Leapfrog Group’s annual list of top hospitals, making it one of 12 children’s hospitals recognized nationally and the only one in Arizona to receive the honor.

Top hospitals have lower infection rates, better outcomes, decreased length of stay and fewer readmissions, said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group.

By achieving Top Hospital status, Phoenix Children’s Hospital has proven it prioritizes the safety of its patients, is committed to transparency and provides exemplary care for families and patients throughout Arizona,” she said.
