Texas Health Resources has purchased the Atrium Medical Center in Corinth with plans to convert the building to Texas Health Behavioral Health Hospital Corinth, an inpatient and outpatient behavioral health hospital.
The 62,500-square-foot facility, located on five acres of land at 3305 Corinth Parkway in Denton County, has operated as a long-term acute care hospital since it was constructed in 2008. Texas Health immediately will begin a more than $13 million renovation to the 60-bed hospital to convert it to a behavioral health hospital.
“We are happy to be able to expand our behavioral health services throughout North Texas, especially with inpatient and outpatient offerings for patients,” said Ramona Osburn, senior vice president of Behavioral Health Services for Texas Health Resources. “This facility will provide the full continuum of care for behavioral health patients with the ability to treat the patient throughout their lifespan.”
According to a 2013 report conducted by The Meadows Mental Health Policy Institute for Texas, an estimated one in three crisis screenings in Denton County were performed in medical hospital emergency rooms, with 90 percent of those screenings in response to suicidal ideation or attempts. Suicide rates in Denton County have more than tripled in the last three years with the majority in age groups 14-24 and 50-65. From 2008 to 2012, the rate of adolescents with a serious mental illness in Denton County grew by 300 percent.
Texas Health currently operates 16 behavioral health entities in North Texas, offering a wide range of services to the community. Texas Health is also building Texas Health Residential Treatment Center, a residential addiction treatment facility currently under construction in Mansfield that is scheduled to open in May 2017.
The wholly-owned Texas Health Behavioral Health Hospital Corinth will include 60 licensed behavioral health beds to treat four distinct populations: adolescent, child, adult and geriatric.
“We anticipate this facility will enable Texas Health to fill a crucial gap to improve the behavioral health and well-being of the people in the communities we serve,” Osburn said.
Construction on the Corinth hospital is expected to take about a year with an opening date set for June 2017.
