Thursday, March 19, 2015

The Massachusetts Life Sciences Center said it was giving more than $17 million to colleges, hospitals, and schools in Greater Boston.

State officials made the announcement at Roxbury Community College, which will receive $3 million to overhaul its outdated lab training classrooms and is one of the largest beneficiaries of the grants. Several high schools and middle schools in and around Boston received a total of $800,000 to buy science and technology teaching supplies.

Roxbury Community College “now will be able to upgrade and expand classrooms and laboratories for the benefit of our students as they pursue opportunities in the life sciences fields,” said Valerie Roberson, the community college’s president, in a statement. “The grant will help to prepare them to join the skilled life sciences workforce across the Commonwealth.”

Other major recipients includ the Forsyth Institute and Brigham and Women’s Hospital, which received $4.8 million to launch a center devoted to the study of microbes; Boston Children's Hospital, which received $2.2 million; and Boston University and Boston Medical Center, which received $2.3 million for three separate projects.

The Massachusetts Life Sciences Center is a state-funded investment agency.
