Universal Health Services withdraws plans to build psychiatric hospital in Rocklin, California

Monday, January 18, 2016

Universal Health Services has withdrawn its application to build a $40 million psychiatric hospital near Whitney High School in Rocklin.

Plans for the hospital ran into opposition from neighbors, and the proposal was scheduled to be heard by the Rocklin planning commission at its meeting Jan. 19. Staff had recommended denial.

The company, in a letter to the city, said the application is “not being withdrawn because of alleged risk factors to the public,” and it said it is looking for alternative sites inside and outside of Rocklin.

Universal Health (NYSE: UHS) had wanted to build a 102-bed psychiatric hospital on a vacant parcel in the Orchard Creek Business Park. Based in King of Prussia, Penn., the company operates two other behavioral health hospitals in the region: Heritage Oaks and Sierra Vista.

The only other private psychiatric hospital in the area is Sutter Center for Psychiatry.

Experts agree there is a critical shortage of beds for psychiatric care in the region.
