The University of Kentucky Board of Trustees health care committee approved spending $37 million to continue expansion and renovation of hospital facilities.
About $23 million will be spent on the Kentucky Children's Hospital. The new construction will expand the hospital space from 53,000 feet to 86,000 feet to incorporate a larger neonatal intensive care unit and outpatient treatment area. Michael Karpf, executive vice president for health affairs, said more space became available when they decided not to tear down the old Chandler hospital building.
An additional $12 million will be used to move physical, occupational and respiratory therapy services to Pavilion A, the new hospital tower.
The last $2 million will be spent on planning for the next phase of development, including changes to the Good Samaritan Hospital now owned by UK.
The new spending brings the total on hospital construction to $875 million out of $1 billion approved by the General Assembly. The money will be provided by hospital revenues.
