Xavier University's new Center for Innovation partners with Cincinnati medical device company, MedaCheck

Tuesday, April 14, 2015

Xavier University's new Center for Innovation is partnering with a medical device startup to help bring the technology to the healthcare market.

The partnership between Xavier and MedaCheck will get the device in front of XU alumni in influential positions in the health care industry.

"Xavier’s grads tend to be in a lot of these large medical companies and they play significant roles in making things happen," MedaCheck founder and CEO Jeffrey Shepard told me.

MedaCheck makes specialized tablet computers that help remind seniors to take their medicines and alerts a call center to contact a physician or caretaker if they don't. The company was the subject of a Business Courier cover story on how the connections provided by the Cincinnati startup ecosystem have paved the way for MedaCheck's success. That story is now unlocked online for all readers.

The partnership also gives Xavier students exposure to emerging technology to help prepare them for working in the health care industry, XU Chief Innovation Officer Shawn Nason told me.
"It’s about exposing students to the newest in technology in the health care sector," Nason said. "The reason Center for Innovation is partnering with MedaCheck is to focus on our vertical on population health and how a consumer can own their own health through emerging technologies."

Financial details of the partnership were not disclosed.

Xavier is sponsoring four health care summits in 2015 in Cincinnati, Boston, Chicago and Nashville. MedaCheck will have the opportunity to present its technology at those summits.

"We love what Xavier is doing from an innovation standpoint, so for us to partner with a large education institution like Xavier made a lot of sense," Shepard said. "They’re able to provide additional value to their alumni and we’re able to benefit from those relationships."
