AHN Commits $43M to Renovate & Expand Allegheny General Hospital
Introduction:
Allegheny Health Network (AHN) has commenced a major $34 million renovation and expansion of the emergency department (ED) at Allegheny General Hospital (AGH) in Pittsburgh. The planned upgrade aims to enhance the hospital’s ability to deliver critical care services, responding to increasing demand with improved capacity and efficiency.
Features:
The phased project, covering 36,000 square feet, and the expanded ED will feature 57 treatment areas, including 48 patient beds.
These will be arranged with open sightlines to improve visibility and workflow, while ambient glass enclosures will support a more transparent and navigable environment for both patients and medical staff.
The renovation will take place over five stages to reduce any impact on patient care. The first phase, set to be finalised by autumn, will focus on the initial stages of patient experience.
This includes a redesigned waiting area, triage and care rooms, and dedicated spaces for patients undergoing tests. A new “forward flow” process will help ensure continuous movement through the department, aiming to reduce wait times and enhance service delivery.
Key updates in this phase include a new, more visible ED entrance positioned near a centralised security post staffed by Highmark Health police officers.
Additionally, a larger X-ray suite will be built next to current CT facilities, and new equipment storage areas will be introduced to support staff workflow.
This initiative forms part of a broader plan to modernise the AGH campus over the coming decade. It reflects the hospital’s ongoing role in clinical innovation, specialist care delivery, and its position as a key academic centre within Highmark Health’s Living Health strategy.
The project is expected to be completed by the end of 2027.
