Apollo Hospitals’ foray into Mumbai, India

Introduction

Apollo Hospitals Enterprise Ltd announced that it is building 3 hospitals in Mumbai investing approximately US$ 151 million (Rs600 crore). The three hospitals will come under a separate company called Western Hospitals, which is a joint venture of the Apollo group and One Equity Partners, a subsidiary of the JP Morgan group.

With over 8000 beds in more than 41 hospitals, Apollo Hospitals is the largest healthcare chain in Asia. But these three hospitals will be its first foray into the city of Mumbai. Considering Apollo’s record, these are in all likelihood going to be super-speciality hospitals. In the first phase Apollo will build a 350-bed hospital in the Navi Mumbai suburb outside Mumbai and will be built at a cost of US$ 63 million (Rs 250 crore) in collaboration with the Yash Birla Group. This facility will be spread across 3.5 acres of land, and will ramp up to 550 beds thereafter. Another facility will come up at Thane. This will be a 250-bed facility. Over the next 2-3 years Apollo plans to build facilities providing 2000 beds.
