Introduction

The Apollo Tyres Group announced its foray into the healthcare sector with a 500-bed hospital in Gurgaon. Named as Artemis Health Sciences (AHS) Pvt. Ltd, the healthcare arm of Apollo Tyres would be a wholly owned subsidiary of PTL Enterprises Ltd - a part company of the Onkar S Kanwar group - and will have diverse interests in medical education, research and manufacturing of medical accessories. The Gurgaon hospital, Artemis Health Institute, would be a multi-superspeciality facility with specialisations in Oncology, Oardio-thoracic and Musculo-skeletal diseases.

This hospital is likely to be commissioned in the middle of 2007. Artemis Health Science Pvt. Ltd is looking to increase it presence in are in a phased manner. Phase 1 would be the setting up of the hospital projects. The next would encompass the establishment of a world-class clinical research facility. Phase 3 would entail the manufacture of high technology hospital consumables, and the final phase would be the creation of an institute for medical training and education for nurses and paramedics.

Hospital Features

The 500-bed Artemis Health Institute would specilalise in Oncology, Cardio-Thoracic and Musculo-Skeletal diseases. Phase 1 of the project is expected to be complete in the next 18 months with an investment of around Rs 145 crores. This would entail the setting up of an initial 212-beds, OPD facility, a world class Oncology Centre and nine state-of-the-art operating theatres. AHS has four verticals, which include healthcare delivery (under which the 500- bed hospital is being constructed), research and development, medical education (both medical and paramedical education institutes) and manufacturing medical equipment. Over time, AHS is looking to set up an all-India network of such facilities in cities, which have the highest gap between felt demand and quality healthcare services.

The next cities after Gurgaon have been identified as Ahmedabad, Greater Noida and Kanpur. An alternative medicine centre is also being planned in Kerala. Artemis will either undertake greenfield projects in these locations or acquire suitable existing medical facilities.

PTL Enterprises Ltd is also planning to manufacture high technology hospital consumables and is in talks with some of the international companies. It also plans to setup an institute for medical training and education for nurses and paramedics. Over the next few years, Artemis plans to undertake these initiatives to enable AHS become a complete Indian healthcare provider.
