Ballad Health Invests $72 Million to Expand Johnson City Medical Center ED

Introduction:

Ballad Health has started construction on a major expansion of the emergency department at Johnson City Medical Center in Tennessee. The $72 million project is designed to increase capacity, enhance patient care and strengthen emergency, trauma and paediatric services for communities across the Appalachian Highlands.

Features:

The expansion will add approximately 13,000 square feet to the existing emergency department, improving capacity for adult, paediatric and trauma care.

The upgraded facility will incorporate advanced technology, expanded treatment areas, improved waiting spaces and enhanced parking facilities to provide a better patient experience.

The project has been designed to support the growing demand for high-acuity and trauma services at Johnson City Medical Center, a Level 1 Trauma Centre serving patients across Northeast Tennessee, Southwest Virginia, Western North Carolina and parts of Kentucky.

Construction will be completed in multiple phases to minimise disruption to patients and visitors, with Phase 1 currently underway, Phase 2 scheduled to begin by the end of 2026 and Phase 3 planned for 2027.

The emergency department expansion forms part of Ballad Health's wider strategy to strengthen rural healthcare infrastructure and improve access to specialised emergency services across the region.
