Bon Secours Begins $370 Million Critical Care Tower Expansion at St. Mary’s Hospital

Introduction

Bon Secours St. Mary’s Hospital in Richmond, Virginia, has started construction on a new eight-storey Critical Care Tower as part of a major $370 million expansion plan. The development will modernise facilities, increase capacity and support specialised services in cardiology, neurology, cancer care, neonatal care and intensive care.

Features

The new 200,000-square-foot tower will more than double critical care capacity and provide fully private patient rooms to improve comfort and privacy.

Expanded specialist units will include upgraded cardiac, neuro and neonatal intensive care facilities, with the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit growing from 21 bays to 31 private spaces for infants and families.

A new rooftop helipad will enable quicker and safer transfers for seriously ill patients. Smart hospital technology using artificial intelligence will support patient monitoring and safety, while state-of-the-art operating rooms, including cardiac surgery suites, will be refurbished.

The project also creates additional parking, new job opportunities and shell space for future development to meet rising healthcare needs.

The expansion ensures improved access to advanced hospital care for patients across the region. Around 357 new roles are expected to be added as the project progresses, supporting clinical services and hospital operations.

The Critical Care Tower is due to be completed in 2028, with additional renovation work on existing facilities continuing into 2029.
