Columbia Hospital to open 10 mid-sized hospitals in India

Columbia Asia, which opened a 90-bed facility in Bangalore last year, has announced plans to open as many as 10 mid-sized community hospitals all over the country in the next few years.

Expansion plans

The Columbia Asia chain has a ten-year-old presence in Malaysia and Vietnam and is promoted by a team of Seattle-based NRI investors. The group is consolidating its Asian presence by expanding in Malaysia and setting up new facilities in Indonesia and Sri Lanka.

According to Columbia Asia, the plan is to have at least 10 community hospitals in the next four years, including expansions in the hub, Bangalore, and forays into A and B cities. The total investment has not been disclosed yet.

Adding to the existing facilities in Bangalore, two more of chain hospitals are likely to come up in Bangalore – one in Bangalore East and another at Bangalore South - by 2007 or 2008 at an investment of around Rs 65 crore (US$ 14.5 Million). Columbia plans to introduce invasive cardiology procedures at the upcoming 170-bed tertiary centre at Yeshwantpur, Bangalore. Construction work for the hospitals started in May 2005 and is likely open in Quarter 2, 2007.

The work on the company’s Delhi center, to be located in the Dwarka area and Mysore, began mid 2006.
