FIU and Baptist Health Break Ground on $158 Million Academic Medical Centre

Introduction:

Florida International University, in partnership with Baptist Health, has started construction of a new academic medical centre on its main campus. Backed by a $158 million investment from the State of Florida, the facility will strengthen healthcare delivery, medical education and clinical research while expanding access to advanced outpatient services across South Florida.

The seven-storey, 163,000-square-foot academic medical centre will be located on FIU's main campus near Southwest 107th Avenue and Southwest 10th Street.

The facility will combine medical education, research and patient care, allowing medical students, residents and clinical faculty to train in the same environment where patients receive treatment.

It will support interprofessional education for students in medicine, nursing, physician assistant studies, occupational therapy and other allied health programmes.

The centre will offer a range of outpatient services, including multi-speciality care, diagnostic imaging, same-day surgery, infusion therapy and an outpatient retail pharmacy.

Dedicated learning spaces for medical students and residents will help expand graduate medical education programmes and support the training of future healthcare professionals.

The project further strengthens the long-term collaboration between FIU and Baptist Health, with plans to expand residency and fellowship programmes to more than 350 trainees over the next five years.

The academic medical centre is expected to begin operations in 2028.
