New 300-bed Government Hospital at Coimbatore, India
EA 300-bed hospital will be built in the city of Coimbatore in the South Indian state of Tamil Nadu. The State government has approved the project which will be funded by a US$ 2.3 Million (Rs. 10 crore) donation from Dr. Alagiri Swamy, a nephrologist based at Memphis in the United States. The hospital will serve as a satellite health centre at Peelamedu and will be located at the Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital (CMCH) campus
The new facility will be of help to people living in Peelamedu and areas east of the city who find it difficult to reach the CMCH on Tiruchi Road in the heart of the city.
The hospital will have the following departments (bed strength in brackets):
Medicine (60)
Surgery (60)
Obstetrics and gynaecology (60)
Paediatrics (60)
Orthopaedics (30)
Trauma (15)
Intensive medical care unit (15)
Space shortage in the existing hospital has ruled out expansion. The in-patient flow is more than the bed strength of 1,060.
The hospital construction is expected to be completed in two years time. However, the construction will start only after the design is finalised in consultation with the Director of Medical Education and the Public Works Department.
