Henry Ford Health Invests $2.2 Billion for its New Hospital Construction
Introduction:
Work is advancing on the $2.2 billion Destination: Grand project on West Grand Boulevard in Detroit. The development includes a new hospital, a central energy hub, a multi-storey parking deck and a shared services building. Construction began on 12 September 2024 and has already transformed the area’s skyline.
Key Features:
The centrepiece is a 1.2-million-square-foot hospital, where the steel frame and core structure are now visible.
This facility will include a new emergency department twice the size of the current one, along with 28 operating theatres designed for complex procedures and a 20-storey patient tower.
Alongside it, a four-storey, 30,000-square-foot central energy hub will provide all-electric heating and cooling, eliminating the use of natural gas and featuring a 70,000-gallon stormwater system to cut water usage.
A seven-storey, 558,000-square-foot parking garage with space for more than 1,500 vehicles, including 150 barrier-free spaces, will connect directly to the hospital and cancer pavilion via enclosed walkways.
The final element is a 185,000-square-foot shared services building, which will house the kitchen, loading dock and sterile processing areas.
The central energy hub is expected to be complete in 2027.
