$1bn International Medical City to Open In Oman

Introduction:

The preliminary infrastructure construction, of an International Medical City (IMC) in Saladah, Oman is currently in progress under the Government’s Health Vision 2050. Keeping in mind the favourable environment of Saladah, and its booming tourism market, it has been chosen the destination for the IMC.

Expansion Strategy

The first phase of the IMC will be inaugurated in 2016, while the second phase will start operations by 2021. Under the phase one of development would be a 250-bed multi-speciality tertiary-care hospital, the organ transplant centre, the rehabilitation centre, diagnostic centre, and the ancillary services and infrastructural developments. In the first phase, 153 hotel apartments and staff accommodations would be constructed.

Features
The medical city will include a 540-bed tertiary care multispecialty hospital, along with a transplant and dialysis centre of excellence, a rehabilitation centre, and a diagnostic centre of excellence. Some of the other features included would be – a trauma and emergency unit, ambulance facilities, an intensive care unit, blood banks and pharmacies. It would also include organ transplant donor registries and a four-star hotel. Under a social program, the medical city would also provide free services to the lesser privileged. IMC would also help in building the capacities and skills of Oman medics. It would generate ample employment opportunities for Omanis as well as other international professionals.

Budget
The approximate aggregate investment in the project would be OMR 385 million (US$1 billion). Investment in the first phase would be OMR 119.4 million (US$310 million.)
