‘Island Health’ Plans Two New Hospitals in Courtenay, Campbell River
Introduction:
Island Health has entered into an agreement with Tandem Health Partners for construction of new hospitals in North Island costing a total of US$606.2 million to meet the needs of North Island region residents. Under the terms of agreement, Tandem will design, build, partly finance, and maintain the two new hospitals, under a public-private partnership.
The two new state-of-the-art hospitals (project) are expected to create 1,900 direct jobs for 145 trades during the construction period.
Construction of these hospitals began in July 2014 and the project is scheduled to begin patient intake in the fall of 2017. Project officials have been working with B.C.’s Industry Training Authority, local First Nations and regional employment agencies for skilled workers to work on the project.
Budget:
Comox Valley Hospital in Courtenay is expected to cost US$331.7 million and Campbell River Hospital will cost US$274.5 million.
The project cost is being shared by the province at 60 per cent and the Comox Strathcona Regional Hospital District at 40 per cent.
Objectives:
The main objectives of the project include enhancing North Island acute care capacity with improved quality of care, improving access to services for all North Island communities and maximising staff and physician recruitment and retention potential.
Location:
The new Campbell River hospital will be located on the existing Campbell River Hospital site at 375 2nd Avenue, within traditional Laichwailtach territory.
The new Comox Valley hospital will be located at 101 Lerwick Road, next to North Island College, within the traditional territory of the K’ómoks First Nation.
Features:
The 153-bed Comox Valley Hospital in Courtenay will spread over 39,826 sq. metres / 428,700 sq. feet overall space while the 95-bed Campbell River hospital will have a built-up area of 32,316 sq. metres / 348,000 sq. feet.
Each hospital will have University of B.C. academic teaching space.
The two new hospitals will offer emergency, maternity services, orthopedic clinic, ambulatory procedures, cardio-pulmonary diagnostic services, operating rooms, surgical daycare, telemetry, pediatric care, outpatient clinics, chemotherapy and medical daycare, medical Imaging (including MRI), rehab, pharmacy, laboratory services.
