Indian Government plans two new referral medical institutes

Introduction

The government of India has announced that it is planning to set up two more premier referral institutes in the states of West Bengal and Uttar Pradesh on the lines of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi. The site for these institutes needs to be chosen by the Uttar Pradesh government.

Location

These referral institutes will be located at Raiganj in West Bengal's North Dinajpur district and an yet to be finalised location in Uttar Pradesh.

Budget
The Indian government plans to invest US$ 170 million (Rs. 8.23 billion) in each institute.

Features

Each referral institution will have a 960-bedded hospital, with 500 beds for the medial college hospital and 300 beds for its speciality and super speciality departments. And apart from this, for the ICU and accident trauma department 100 beds, 30 beds for physical medicine & rehabilitation departments and 30 beds for the Ayush (Ayurveda, Yoga & Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy) departments will be kept aside. The institute will also have a nursing college conforming to Nursing Council norms.

Besides running postgraduate and doctoral courses in various disciplines, largely based on Medical Council of India (MCI) norms, the medical college will annually take in 100 undergraduate students.
