Mount Sinai Starts US$1 billion Downtown Healthcare Revamp

Introduction:

Mount Sinai Health System has requested approval for revamp of its new Mount Sinai Beth Israel Hospital (MSBI) and New York Eye and Ear Infirmary of Mount Sinai that are part of a US$1 billion revamp.

Features:

The hospital will house private inpatient beds, cardiac and neurological interventional services, an operative platform and a state-of-the-art emergency department, all of which will be integrated with the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary unit of Mount Sinai.

The integration of the new facilities will allow for a 24/7 eye trauma emergency unit as well as state-of-the-art imaging, pharmacy, and laboratory services.

The plan also includes an outline for a new Mount Sinai Comprehensive Behavioral Health Center, which it has committed US$140 million to.

The new behavioral health center will provide Downtown residents psychiatric, addiction, physical health, and social service needs.

The hospital noted that the clinic will not provide methadone treatment services.

In the meantime, the current MSBI hospital and the emergency unit will remain fully open and accessible until the opening of the new hospital. Demolition for the new MSBI hospital was completed earlier this year and, pending approvals, the new hospital will begin construction in 2020.

The project is expected to be completed in 2023.
