Introduction:
Nanaimo plans to modernise the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital (NRGH) that is located at the south of the current emergency department.
Features:
The new ICU unit will be constructed with an investment of US$41.57 million. The existing intensive care unit is outdated regarding its space and functionality.
The modern ICU will be three times bigger than the current unit which includes advancements such as ceiling mounted service booms and overhead patient lifts, 12 larger single-patient rooms, a medication room, a family consult room and a rest room with staff break room. Moreover, it also consists of transitional places where critical-care patients need less monitoring than in the ICU.
The new ICU is expected to complete its construction and be ready for patient operations in 2023. Once the construction is completed the new ICU will create 200 direct jobs and 100 indirect jobs.
