Novant Health Hemby Children's Hospital Invests $2.25 Million to Build Pediatric Intermediate Care Unit

Introduction:

Novant Health Hemby Children’s Hospital is set to enhance its paediatric care services with the construction of the Novant Health Hemby Children’s Hospital Tony Stewart Intermediate Care Unit. This expansion is supported by a generous $2.25 million donation from championship-winning racecar driver Tony Stewart.

Features:

The new paediatric intermediate care unit (IMCU) will provide specialised support for children who no longer require intensive care but still need close medical attention, further testing, and additional organ support.

The IMCU will serve as a transitional care unit between the PICU and the general paediatric ward, ensuring continuous medical oversight while preserving critical care resources for the most seriously ill children.

The unit will be equipped with the same advanced medical technology available in the PICU and will maintain a higher nurse-to-patient ratio to meet the specific needs of this patient group.

With the expansion of Novant Health Hemby Children’s Hospital, the six-bed IMCU is expected to accommodate an additional 2,100 children annually and is designed to provide a comfortable and reassuring environment, continuing the hospital’s under-the-sea theme to create a child-friendly atmosphere for patients and their families.

The new IMCU is scheduled for completion in 2026 as part of a broader multi-phase expansion of Novant Health Hemby Children’s Hospital.
