Ochsner Health Breaks Ground on New $300 Million Children’s Hospital

Introduction:

Ochsner Health has officially begun construction on The Gayle and Tom Benson Ochsner Children’s Hospital, a major development in paediatric healthcare for the Gulf South region.

Features:

The facility will include an expanded and more accessible paediatric emergency department, along with enhanced operating theatres, imaging services, and a Level IV surgical neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) for babies needing advanced surgical care.

In addition to expanding access to high-quality care, the development will improve the surrounding community through added green spaces and infrastructure. Plans include a landscaped pocket park with oak trees and a pedestrian crossing to the Mississippi River levee pathway. The site will also feature improved underground drainage with a retention capacity of more than 435,000 gallons.

The Gayle and Tom Benson Ochsner Children’s Hospital marks a major advancement in developing a state-of-the-art, inclusive, and welcoming healthcare facility dedicated to promoting the long-term health and well-being of children throughout the region.

The new project is scheduled for completion in early 2028.
