Panhandle State Hospital Construction Begins with $159 Million Investment
Introduction
The Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) has officially begun construction on the new Panhandle State Hospital in Amarillo. Backed by $159 million in state funding, the project marks a significant step forward in expanding mental health services in rural Texas, particularly across the 26-county Panhandle region.
Key Features
This 164,475-square-foot hospital will be the first state-operated mental health facility in the region. Designed to meet modern psychiatric care standards, the new hospital will offer 75 inpatient beds for adults requiring high-quality mental health treatment.
The facility is intended to improve local access to essential mental healthcare, reducing the need for long-distance travel and supporting recovery within the community.
The hospital will provide 24-hour, evidence-based psychiatric care for adults. Patients will benefit from therapeutic environments that include shared activity areas and outdoor courtyards, which are designed to promote social interaction, recovery, and emotional well-being.
The new Panhandle State Hospital is expected to be completed and operational by 2027.
