£33 Million Expansion to Transform Healthcare at Royal Alexandra Hospital

Introduction

The historic Royal Alexandra Hospital is set to undergo a major transformation through a £33 million investment by the Welsh Government. The project aims to improve NHS services for residents of Rhyl and the surrounding areas, easing pressure on nearby Ysbyty Glan Clwyd’s emergency department.

Features

The redevelopment will create a new purpose-built facility that includes a minor injuries unit capable of treating over 20,000 patients per year.

A 14-bed “ready-to-go-home” reablement unit will bring together NHS and social care teams to support patients returning home after medical and surgical treatment.

Radiology services will also be expanded, and four new dental suites will improve access to NHS dental care while increasing training opportunities for dental nurses.

Construction of the new facility is underway, with completion expected in 2027.
