Sarasota County Board Approves $450M for First Hospital in North Port
Introduction:
The Sarasota County Public Hospital Board has approved a $ 450 million plan to build the first hospital in North Port, located on a 32-acre site along North Sumter Boulevard near I-75. This marks Sarasota Memorial Health Care System’s third acute-care hospital and responds to long-standing community demand.
Features:
North Port, the largest and one of the fastest-growing cities in Sarasota County, will see a six-storey, 100-bed facility providing emergency, surgical, and specialist care, along with diagnostic and outpatient services. The site will also include a 60,000-square-foot medical office building and an energy centre.
The first phase will feature private inpatient rooms, surgical units, and emergency and diagnostic departments. The top floor will house mechanical systems, with infrastructure in place for future expansion to 208 beds.
The hospital system is also planning to recruit over 70 physicians to support the new facility. Plans for the nearby Wellen Park campus and other health centres will be reviewed later this year as part of the system’s wider development strategy.
Initial groundwork will begin immediately, with construction expected to start in 2025 and take around 30 months. The hospital is scheduled to open in autumn 2028.
