Shellharbour Begins $780M Hospital Project to Revolutionize Local Care
Introduction
The Australian and New South Wales Governments have committed more than $780 million to deliver the New Shellharbour Hospital and Integrated Services project. This major investment aims to expand healthcare capacity and improve patient care across the Illawarra region.
Features
The project involves building a new hospital on Dunmore Road in Dunmore, expanding sub-acute services at Bulli Hospital, and adding new rehabilitation and palliative care beds at Wollongong Hospital. Additionally, a new community health centre is planned for Warrawong on the former Port Kembla Hospital site.
While work at Bulli and Wollongong Hospitals has been completed, construction of the Shellharbour Hospital and Warrawong health centre is still underway.
In addition, a new community health centre will be built in Warrawong on the former Port Kembla Hospital site. While the works at Bulli and Wollongong have been completed, the Shellharbour Hospital and Warrawong health centre are currently under delivery.
New Shellharbour Hospital will house an expanded emergency department, specialised elective surgery services, acute medical care and rehabilitation and aged care services.
It will also provide expanded mental health services, a new drug and alcohol unit, renal dialysis, and a wide range of outpatient care.
The development will include improved car parking and better public transport links, while community health and sub-acute services across the region will be realigned for greater efficiency and integration.
