Southeast Health Breaks Ground on $81M Emergency Department and Patient Tower Expansion

Introduction

Southeast Health has started construction on a major expansion of its Emergency Department and inpatient facilities. The project, valued at $81 million, is the largest single construction investment at the Medical Center since it opened in 1957. The development forms part of the organisation’s strategic growth plan and follows approval from both the Houston County Health Care Authority and the Alabama Certificate of Need Review Board.

Features

The multi-phase project will double the size of the Emergency Department to 38,000 sq ft, enabling treatment of up to 75,000 patients each year.

Two new floors will be added above the Emergency Department, providing 52 inpatient beds and increasing overall hospital capacity to 455.

Additional improvements include a new CT scanner within the ED, a dedicated safe area for behavioural medicine patients, relocation of the Medicine Shop to a more accessible storefront location, and redesigned waiting areas to improve comfort, natural light and the overall patient experience.

The expansion is also expected to support regional job growth through increased staffing and opportunities for local businesses.

The expansion is planned for completion in late 2027, supporting future demand for emergency and inpatient care in the region.
