The University of Alabama Invests US$73 million to Expand UAB Hospital University Emergency Department

Introduction:

The University of Alabama invests US$73 million to initiate both temporary and long-term expansions of the UAB Hospital University Emergency Department (UED) located in USA.

Features:

The long-term plans for the expansion of emergency department include significant renovations and construction projects.

The expansion involves renovating the first floor of UAB (University of Eastville at Birmingham) Hospital's North Pavilion. This renovation will transform the adjacent atrium into clinical care space, providing a new area for medical services.

Additionally, a new three-storey space will be constructed in the drop-off drive of the North Pavilion. This construction project will result in 66,030 square feet of new space.

The new area will house various facilities, including 59 exam rooms and additional imaging capacity specifically designed for emergency clinical care.

The expansion project enables to increase the volume of space available for patient care, improve wait times, enhance patient and staff satisfaction, and allow for the development and implementation of new operational models.

The UED serves as a crucial entry point for patients to UAB Hospital, with 30 percent of admissions originating from the emergency care department.

By expanding and improving the Emergency Department, UAB aims to provide unmatched treatment to every patient, reduce the need for diversions, and accommodate the increasing number of patients.

The expansion process began with temporary renovations in June 2023. These initial renovations focused on the interior construction of the North Pavilion space, resulting in the creation of nine new exam rooms and temporary waiting room space.

The construction for the long-term expansion is projected to commence in 2024.
