UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospitals Invests US$1.49 billion to Construct New Hospital in USA

Introduction:

UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital is investing US$1.49 billion to build a new children’s hospital in Oakland, USA.

Features:

The new seven-storey, 277,500-square-foot facility will feature an expanded emergency department, doubling the current space dedicated to child- centred trauma care for which the Oakland hospital is renowned.

This additional space will enhance care efficiency and accommodate updated imaging and surgical services, a new neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), and seven state-of-the-art surgical suites.

The new hospital will significantly increase the number of single-patient rooms, expanding from the current 39 to 137, and will offer accommodations for families with multiple children in need of care. Additionally, the facility will include a much-needed 20-bed inpatient behavioural health unit.

Beyond the hospital building, the project encompasses a new administrative building, cutting-edge MRI equipment, and other technological upgrades to support the modern emergency department.

Renovations will be made to the existing patient tower and the diagnostic and treatment building, along with essential infrastructure upgrades, the construction of a new parking garage, and the relocation of the helistop for emergency transports.

Scheduled to open in 2030, the new facility will provide a light-filled, healing environment with access to outdoor spaces, offering a peaceful respite for patients, families, and staff.
