Virtua Health Announces $500 Million Expansion with New Patient Pavilion
Introduction:
Virtua Health has marked the 75th anniversary of Virtua Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital with the announcement of a major development project. The health system revealed plans for a £500 million expansion and renovation of the Camden-based hospital, which will include a six-storey patient care pavilion named after long-standing supporter Marvin Samson.
Features:
The expansion will increase the overall size of the hospital by 35 per cent, adding nearly 200,000 square feet to the existing site located at the junction of Haddon and Euclid avenues.
The new facility will serve as a central hub for complex medical services such as cardiovascular care, organ transplants, and advanced neurological treatments, delivered in partnership with Penn Medicine.
Key features of the upcoming Samson Pavilion include 78 private patient rooms, 10 operating theatres (including two hybrid suites), four cardiac catheterisation laboratories, and three electrophysiology laboratories.
The building will also house two gastrointestinal endoscopy rooms, 40 pre- and post-surgery recovery spaces, a neurosurgical stroke intervention suite, and a centralised post-anaesthesia care unit with 40 adaptable bays.
A new hospital entrance and modern lobby will also be part of the design, offering a welcoming space for patients and visitors.
The expanded hospital is expected to begin serving patients by the end of 2027.
