Washington Regional Secures $4.5M to Expand Medical Training
Introduction
Washington Regional Medical Center, in partnership with the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS), will enhance their collaborative graduate medical education (GME) program in Northwest Arkansas. This expansion is made possible by newly approved funding of around $4.5 million.
Key Features
The new funding will allow the programme to add 26 more residency and fellowship positions, covering key areas such as emergency medicine, neurology, general surgery, transitional year placements, and high-demand internal medicine subspecialties.
It recommended expanding graduate medical education as a key solution to improve healthcare access.
Each new residency position is estimated to generate more than £550,000 ($715,000) in annual economic activity.
As more doctors train and remain in the area, the local economy is expected to benefit from increased job creation and healthcare services.
The new residency and fellowship slots are expected to be introduced over the coming years, with the programme reaching full implementation by the end of 2027.
