Asep Medical Launches Novel AI-based Sepsis Technology to Identify COVID-19 Severity

Asep Medical has launched novel AI-based Sepsis Technology capable of accurately assessing the severity of COVID-19 infections using a simple blood sample.

The test utilises AI-based sepsis technology to rapidly and accurately identify patients at the highest risk of progressing to severe sepsis. By pinpointing high-risk individuals early on, healthcare providers can administer targeted treatments, potentially preventing disease progression and improving patient survival rates.

Moreover, sepsis has been a significant contributing factor to the most severe outcomes in past pandemics, the SepsetER test holds promise for future outbreaks.

By distinguishing between patients who urgently require treatment and those with milder or asymptomatic disease, this test can play a vital role in efficiently managing future pandemics.

During the COVID-19 pandemic that spanned from 2020 to 2022, it became increasingly evident that a considerable number of individuals who experienced severe disease ultimately succumbed due to sepsis, which is a life-threatening dysfunctional response to infection. Understanding COVID-19 as a form of sepsis holds crucial clinical implications for the prognosis and treatment of severely afflicted COVID-19 patients.

The association between COVID-19 and sepsis prompted researchers to analyse the blood of 124 COVID-19 patients from various hospitals. The study focused on both early (1–5 days post-hospital admission) and late (6–20 days post-hospital admission) cases.
