Breakthrough Portable Neuromodulation Stimulator (PoNS™) Device Discovered for Stroke

Helius Medical Technologies, Inc discovered Portable Neuromodulation Stimulator (PoNS™) breakthrough device for the treatment of dynamic gait.

The device is used as a temporary treatmentfor the dynamic gait and balance deficits caused due to symptoms from stroke. Moreover, the device can be used as an adjunct to a supervised therapeutic exercise program in patients 22 years of age and above.

The Portable Neuromodulation Stimulator (PoNS™) is an innovative non-surgical device inclusive of a controller and mouthpiece, delivering electrical stimulation to the surface of the tongue to provide treatment of gait deficit.

Stoke is one of the leading causes of long-term disability in the United States. Approximately, most of the people in America are living with stroke-related complications, and more than 80% of stroke survivors are estimated to develop gait impairment.

In U.S, the PoNS device is indicated for the treatment of gait deficit due to mild-to-moderate symptoms from multiple sclerosis (“MS”).

In Canada, the device is authorized for sale as a class 2 and chronic balance deficit due to mild-to-moderate traumatic brain injury (“mmTBI”) and is to be used in conjunction with physical therapy.

U.S. Food and Drug Administration (“FDA”) has granted Breakthrough Device Designation for the treatment of dynamic gait and balance deficits.
