Eli Lilly introduces World's First Digital Insulin Pen

Eli Lilly and Company in partnership with Battelle Medical Device Solutions has launched two versions of the HumaPen®, a first of its kind digital insulin pen to help simplify the daily management of diabetes. The two variants are named HumaPen® MEMOIR(TM) and HumaPen® LUXURA (TM).

The insulin users who need multiple shots per day would be able to record doses and the time of the dose to simplify the daily management of diabetes. This is especially important for both patients and physicians when developing a diabetes treatment plan that utilises accurate recording of mealtime doses and to aid patient compliance.

MEMOIR a sleek insulin pen with memory, is designed to resemble a writing pen, enabling the potential for more discreet injections in public compared to using a vial and syringe and to easy delivery of insulin to the people with diabetes in their several shots of mealtimes each day. It features in a consumer-friendly "push-to-know" digital display that allows patients to record and review the time, date and their dose of the last 16 insulin shots including the priming doses. The Memoir pen is reusable, with the internal (non-replaceable) battery lasting three years, and comes with a two-year warranty from the company. Patients will still need to purchase new insulin cartridges every month as they would with new vials or pre-filled pens

LUXURA HD an insulin pen that delivers Humalog in smaller increments, is a reusable pen but does not have a battery, and will require cartridges. It can deliver from 1-to-30 units of Humalog in half-unit increments, beginning after the first unit. This type of pen may be attractive to people with diabetes who do not need large amounts of insulin, or parents of some children with diabetes. Both MEMOIR and LUXURA HD require a prescription.
