HKSH Installs Hong Kong’s First Total-Body PET/CT System
HKSH Medical Group has introduced Hong Kong’s first long-axial total-body PET/CT system at HKSH Cancer Centre, expanding its capabilities in precision cancer diagnosis.
Developed by United Imaging Healthcare, the uMI Panorama GS system is designed to provide highly sensitive whole-body imaging with reduced radiation exposure and improved efficiency.
The system features a 148cm axial field of view, allowing major organs including the brain, heart, lungs and liver to be captured in a single scan.
Conventional PET systems typically cover a smaller scanning range, requiring multiple examinations to assess different parts of the body.
According to HKSH, the expanded field of view can increase detection sensitivity by up to 25 times.
Greater photon-detection capability may also allow lower tracer doses, potentially reducing radiation exposure, including for paediatric and other radiation-sensitive patients.
The system supports dynamic imaging to monitor tracer distribution and uptake over time.
AI-based image denoising is also incorporated to improve image quality and support diagnostic assessment.
HKSH plans to combine the technology with its nuclear medicine expertise and range of radiotracers.
Its dual-tracer approach is intended to help identify tumour characteristics that may not be fully detected using a single tracer.
The installation strengthens the collaboration between HKSH and United Imaging and is expected to support the development of advanced nuclear medicine and precision cancer care in Hong Kong and the Greater Bay Area.
