Merit Medical Discovered Breakthrough SCOUT® MD™ Surgical Guidance System

Merit Medical Systems discovered breakthrough SCOUT MD Surgical Guidance System to improve surgical precision and improve patient care for breast and other soft tissue cancers.

The SCOUT MD positioning system helps in the implantation of up to four sets of unique reflectors. When these reflectors implanted in an abnormal breast or other soft tissue, guides surgeons in locating the  tumour  in multiple dimensions for more precise surgery, minimising trauma to healthy tissue and helping to lower the possibility of reoperation and the associated emotional and physical pain with another operation.

One of the most common breast cancer in the world, accounting for 12.5% of all new  cancer cases each year. The treatment is often a lumpectomy (surgery to preserve the breast). However, it is estimated that 20% to 30% of women undergoing a lumpectomy need repeat surgery. Localisation procedures enables surgeons precisely target breast cancer, leading to more successful surgeries and improve overall patient outcomes.

FDA grants Breakthrough Device Designation for the SCOUT MD Surgical Guidance System.
