Novel Avantis System Developed for Impairment Caused due to Chronic Stroke
Reach Neuro developed novel Avantis platform to improve arm and hand movement in chronic stroke patients.
Avantis system allows to deliver small electrical impulses into the spinal cord to help restore arm, shoulder, and hand movement in patients with impairment caused by chronic stroke.
The Avanti system directly restores the patient's ability to control movement, which not only provides instant relief, but also allows for a return to treatment by making even further improvements.
Early evidence suggested that Avantis system is effective in stroke patients even upto 9 years after stroke, well beyond the 6-month time frame of existing treatments. Stimulation allows stroke patients to regain use of their arms and hands and strengthen muscle function without the need for involuntary movements.
About 800,000 people in the United States have a stroke each year, and nearly half of the people experience some form of long-term paralysis causing permanent damage to the brain's ability to send signals to the muscles.
Existing tretaments for stroke focus on acute phase of recovery and it is expected that 50 percent of stroke patients are left with permanent disabilities.
U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) grants breakthrough device designation for Avantis platform.
