Novel Deep Brain Stimulation System Developed to Manage Depression

Abbott developed novel Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) system for the treatment of severe depression a major form of depressive disorder.

The DBS system acts as the personalized, adjustable therapy consisting of thin wires or leads implanted into targeted areas of the brain. DBS system consists of a pulse generator generally implanted under the skin in the chest. It is then connected to the leads to produce electrical impulses that help to modulate abnormal brain activity.

The major advantage of DBS systems is that it can be used with NeuroSphere™ Virtual Clinic, a first-of-its-kind connected allowing people to remotely receive care and therapy adjustments from doctors at their home without the need of travelling.

The movement disorders, such as Parkinson's disease and essential tremor are traditionally controlled using DBS system whereas with the procedure of implanting electrodes in the part of the brain that regulates mood helps in reducing the symptoms of TRD.
