ONWARD Medical Developed Novel ARC-EX Platform for Bladder Control
ONWARD Medical developed a novel ARC-EX platform for bladder control alleviation of spasticity, and blood pressure regulation for people with Spinal cord injury (SCI).
The ARC Therapy, delivered by implantable (ARC-IM) or external (ARC-EX) systems, is designed to deliver targeted, programmed spinal cord stimulation to restore movement and other functions in people with spinal cord injury, and also improves the quality of life.
Three major challenges faced by people with spinal cord injuries are bladder control, spasticity, and blood pressure dysregulation. People with these spinal cord injuries must manage to navigate their daily lives.
Spinal cord injury (SCI) represents a major unmet medical need due to a lack of treatment options. Nearly 7 million people worldwide have a spinal cord injury, of which more than 650,000 are in the United States and Europe alone. People with SCI can have a poor quality of life resulting in paralysis and loss of consciousness, problems with blood pressure control and body stability, increased chance of infection, urinary incontinence, and loss of sexual function. Moreover, the treatment for SCI is expensive.
U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) grants Breakthrough Device Designations to use the ARC-EX platform for bladder control.
