Renata Medical Discovers First-of-its-kind Minima Growth Stent for Treating Aortic Coarctation
Renata Medical has unveiled the Minima Growth Stent, a groundbreaking device specifically designed for neonates, infants, and young children. This innovative stent is engineered to grow with the patient, making it suitable for ongoing expansion as the child develops.
The FDA has approved the Minima Stent for treating vessel narrowing, or stenosis, in the aorta or pulmonary arteries. The aorta carries oxygen-rich blood from the heart to the body, while the pulmonary arteries transport oxygen-poor blood to the lungs.
Narrowing in these arteries can either occur naturally or follow surgical procedures, potentially forcing the heart to work harder and, if untreated, leading to heart failure or death.
The Minima Stent offers a minimally invasive solution for young patients with aortic or pulmonary stenosis. It is introduced through a small needle in the groin or neck. One of the key challenges for paediatric interventional cardiologists is accessing these tiny veins and arteries, often smaller than a standard straw.
The Minima Stent features a unique design with long, thin struts, allowing it to be crimped to less than 2mm. This design enables the stent to expand to larger sizes while maintaining sufficient force to keep the narrowed vessel open.
Most patients receiving the Minima Stent can return home the day after the procedure, and follow-up expansions can often be done on an outpatient basis. The approval of the Minima Stent is set to significantly benefit the youngest and most vulnerable cardiac patients worldwide.
