University of Oxford Introduced Groundbreaking AI-Powered COPD Assessment Technology
Researchers from the Nuffield Department of Primary Care Health Sciences at the University of Oxford have introduced a groundbreaking AI technology for the diagnosis of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), using the innovative N-Tidal device.
This breakthrough technology merges N-Tidal's high-resolution CO2 sensor data with an AI platform that detects lung function changes indicative of COPD, enabling rapid risk assessment for the condition in just minutes.
The N-Tidal device offers a comfortable and efficient assessment process, requiring just one minute of normal, relaxed breathing from the patient. Within five minutes of the patient using the device, a probability of COPD is made available to the clinician.
This stands in stark contrast to the conventional spirometry test, which can take up to 30 minutes per appointment. Moreover, prior usability studies indicate that an impressive 98 percent of patients found the N-Tidal device exceptionally easy to use.
This advancement in medical technology aims to evolve into an automated diagnostic test, with the potential to replace traditional spirometry in certain NHS diagnostic clinical pathways.
Clinical trials have already demonstrated the remarkable accuracy of this technology, boasting a diagnostic precision of over 91 percent in identifying severe COPD from a single breath recording.
