World’s First Portable Carbohydrate Monitoring System Launched in Japan

Kyocera Corporation has launched its first smart, portable carbohydrate monitoring system in Japan.

The innovative device named the Grand Prix Runner-Up was unveiled. The new system can monitor carbohydrate intake and is also small enough to slip into the pocket.

The carbohydrate monitoring system is designed to reinforce wellness by estimating carbohydrate metabolism. This is done mostly on the measurements of pulse-wave patterns from the user's heartbeat.

The device is a radial arterial pulse wave gyro sensor, which the user puts it against the wrist.

Once the user touches the machine to their wrist, the monitor measures pulse waves to estimate carbohydrate metabolism within the blood and in about eight seconds, the results pop up on an accompanying app on the user's smartphone.

The company plans to commercialise the device in 2020 with applications including dietary support and managing pre-diabetic conditions.
