XRlabs Received First-of-its-Kind Milestone in AI-Designed Implants for Conjoined Twin Separation
XRlabs has achieved a first-of-its-kind milestone after its artificial intelligence and extended reality platform was used to design patient-specific skull implants for the successful separation of craniopagus twins.
The technology was applied during a complex surgical procedure performed at PureHealth SEHA Sheikh Khalifa Medical City in Abu Dhabi in 2025, demonstrating the potential of AI-driven personalised implant design in advanced neurosurgery.
Craniopagus twins are born with fused skulls and often share brain tissue and blood vessels, making surgical separation one of the most complex procedures in paediatric medicine. The AI-powered platform transformed CT scan data into real-time three-dimensional anatomical models, enabling surgeons to design customised skull implants within seconds.
The underlying AI model was trained using anatomical data from infants of similar age, allowing implant designs to closely match normal skull development while reducing the need for manual modelling.
The technology also supported detailed pre-operative planning by creating an immersive mixed reality environment where surgeons could study patient-specific anatomy and rehearse the procedure before the final operation.
This enabled improved visualisation of complex vascular and neural structures, helping the surgical team refine its surgical approach and prepare for the lengthy operation.
The successful procedure represents an important advancement in the use of AI and extended reality technologies for highly specialised surgical care.
The Company stated that its platform has now supported more than 100 surgical procedures across three continents, reflecting the increasing adoption of AI-assisted planning and patient-specific implant design to improve surgical precision, clinical efficiency and patient outcomes.
