Can UHI Revolutionise The Healthcare System as UPI Revolutionised Payment Transactions in India?

The implementation of a Universal Healthcare Identity (UHI) system in India can improve healthcare access and equity, promote preventive measures, streamline the healthcare system, and improve patient outcomes and safety. However, challenges such as infrastructure, implementation costs, and data security must be addressed. The UHI system has the potential to revolutionize the healthcare industry in India with the participation and support of all stakeholders.

The healthcare facilities in India are lacking behind in comparison to other developed or developing countries. The country has witnessed significant economic growth subsequently leading to a better lifestyle. However, the healthcare system is lagging and is still the same as it was 10 - 15 years ago. India was recently ranked the most populated country in the world surpassing China, this population growth and meeting the health demands of such a large country is a tricky task. Therefore, the introduction of Universal Healthcare Identity (UHI) for the healthcare system in India can bring major changes in the Indian healthcare system.

UHI is following the principle of a Unified Payments Interface (UPI), which has transformed the payment system in India. Both UPI and UHI use the same principle, where a central platform is used to store/save, access, and manage all the services and information. The difference between them is that UPI uses this centralized system to manage financial transactions, whereas UHI will use it for accessing health-related information and services. This system can improve cooperation among different levels of healthcare and it also helps in diminishing possible duplication and improving the patient care system.

According to the UHI, each patient will have a unique identification number that will provide easy access to their health information to the healthcare providers. The doctors will be then able to easily access their medical history, previous diagnosis, treatments, and test results. This will save a lot of time and the hustle of carrying around a big pile of documents for each treatment.

UHI has many benefits, it can provide healthcare services to all citizens regardless of their financial status, with the ability to reduce the burden of out-of-pocket expenses on patients. It can also streamline the healthcare system and make it efficient by reducing paperwork and other admin tasks. It can also promote preventive measures which can reduce the number of people requiring medical care. It will also be easier for healthcare providers to access the patient's medical history and previous diagnosis along with other details.

The UHI system can also improve patient outcomes and safety by providing healthcare providers with access to complete and accurate medical records, including medications, allergies, and medical history. This can help to reduce the risk of medical errors, improve diagnosis, and facilitate better care coordination among healthcare providers. The time and resources saved from it can be used to address other issues making it more efficient than ever.

Although, UHI can bring a revolution in the Indian healthcare system just like UPI. There are still many challenges that lie ahead, a robust infrastructure and proper implementation strategies are required. All of this needs the support of all the stakeholders, healthcare providers, patients, and the government. The system should be maintained properly and the stakeholders involved should be able to properly use it.

However, it is important to know that healthcare information is much more complex than payment systems. It has many components and would require a lot of coordination collaboration and support from the government and stakeholders. Different organizations will have to coordinate together to provide an easily accessible and working healthcare system. Eventually, it has to deal with other issues such as patient confidentiality, privacy, and security of the patient's medical records or data.

Finally, the UHI system has the potential to revolutionize the system by improving healthcare access and equity by reducing the disparities in providing healthcare. Patients in remote areas can benefit from medicine delivery services and virtual consultations. Patients with multilingual differences can use translation services and multilingual platforms to understand their diagnosis and treatment. The UHI system has the potential to transform the healthcare industry by improving, efficiency, safety, patient engagement, and access to care. However, challenges such as data security, interoperability, and implementation costs must be addressed to successfully adopt the technology. To successfully avoid all these risks and implement a healthcare system for India, the participation and support of all the stakeholders are necessary.
