This groundbreaking service uses a patient's DNA to customize drug dosages and regimens, heralding a new era of healthcare that will prioritize personalized treatments for each person. Experts at KFSH&RC say this analysis enables doctors to prescribe medicines tailored to each patient's unique health conditions and genetic characteristics. A patient's response to drugs may vary significantly depending on their genetic profile. Therefore, what works for one patient may have minimal effect on another. Notably, statistics show that 15% of hospitalizations are caused by adverse drug reactions, placing a huge financial and human burden on healthcare systems worldwide.
This innovative service is a collaboration between the KFSH&RC Center for Genomic Medicine, Healthcare Information Technology Affairs and Pharmaceutical Care. In its initial phase, the service covers the six most commonly prescribed drugs (identified from hospital data), the efficacy of which is known to be affected by genetic variants.
KFSH&RC made it clear that it remains committed to gradually expanding the scope of this service to cover all departments of the hospital. This expanded service demonstrates the hospital’s strong commitment to providing personalized care for each patient, ensuring the highest levels of safety and minimizing harm, while following the latest scientific practices recognized globally.
KFSH&RC plays an important role as a strategic health partner at the Global Health Exhibition in Riyadh from 29 to 31 October, where the hospital will launch innovative services that are expected to boost healthcare outcomes in the region.
