Thailand poised to be Asia's Medical hub through the Medical Devices ASEAN 2018

IMPACT Exhibition Management Co., Ltd. (IMPACT) has launched Medical Devices ASEAN 2018 (MDA 2018) - the international exhibition and academic congress on medical devices; technologies; services and general healthcare. This trade exhibition features a comprehensive range of products and services, including general surgery; orthopedic surgery and rehabilitation medicine; radiology and diagnostic imaging; medical laboratory; IT in healthcare; and medical instruments and consumables. More than 150 exhibitors and 4,000 medical and healthcare professionals, both local and international, are expected to attend the three-day event. The event will be held at hall 1-2, IMPACT Exhibition Center, Bangkok, Thailand from 11-13 July 2018.

Thailand, Asia’s medical hub
Mr. Loy Joon How, General Manager, IMPACT, the organizer of Medical Devices ASEAN 2018, said that “Thailand has given the healthcare industry top priority, as seen in the government’s expenditure on healthcare. In 2015, the government spent 14% of its total budget on the healthcare industry, which accounted for 4.6% of Thailand’s GDP. This is considered to be the highest among ASEAN countries and the world’s seventh highest in healthcare expenditure. With the government’s support, a top-notch medical tourism destination and with the highest number of Joint Commission International (JCI) accredited hospitals by among ASEAN countries, Thailand will certainly strengthen its position as the medical hub of Asia.”

“In 2018, healthcare expenditure in Thailand is expected to reach 617 billion baht with an average growth of 8% from 2014 to 2018. The medical devices industry in Thailand is expected to be worth 42 billion baht this year, a 12% rise from last year. In line with the growth of the industry, IMPACT is fully committed to creating the most comprehensive platform for medical and healthcare professionals. This edition features the theme Building the future of healthcare,” added Mr. Loy.

The future of Thailand’s healthcare industry
As a prelude to the exhibition, Medical Devices ASEAN 2018 Industry Forum was held on 14 February 2018, at Her Royal Highness Princess Bajrakitiyabha Ballroom, Chaloem Phra Kiat Phrabarami 50th Building, Bangkok, Thailand, as a platform for manufacturers, dealers and distributors involved in medical devices industry to network, to discuss the future of Thailand's healthcare industry and to discover the perspectives of public and private sectors’ medical professionals. The panelists included Dr. Marut Jirasrattasiri, Deputy Permanent Secretary of Ministry of Public Health; Dr. Chaiyos Kunanusont, Director of Bangkok Health Research Center, Bangkok Dusit Medical Services Public Co., Ltd. (BDMS); and Mr. Preecha Bhandtivej, President of Thai Medical Device Technology Industry Association (THAIMED).

The panel discussion concluded that while mastering curative and rehabilitative care and filling in transitional care and early detection, healthcare industry in Thailand is also putting more effort in health promotion and disease prevention to keep people healthy and to reduce the risk of developing chronic diseases and morbidities. Real-time health monitoring systems, smart medical devices and robotics are among the medical breakthroughs that would aid these programs and change healthcare in 2018 and the years to come. With the government’s support and increased demand in healthcare market, medical devices industry has a great opportunity for continued success. “MDA 2018 serves as a platform to bring together the producers, distributers, buyers, and medical professionals to develop business networks, as well as generate new ideas and innovations,” said Mr. Preecha.

MDA Congress - academic conferences for medical and healthcare professionals
MDA 2018 is honored to feature a series of academic conferences comprising of valuable and up-to-date topics by the Royal College of Orthopaedic Surgeons of Thailand; the Radiological Society of Thailand; the Nurses’ Association of Thailand under the Royal Patronage of Her Royal Highness the Princess Mother; the Association of Medical Technologists of Thailand under the Patronage of Her Royal Highness Princess Soamsawali; and the Thai Medical Informatics Association. One of the focus areas is “Robotic technology for ageing care”; the conference and competition are organized by the Thai Association for Medical Instrumentation.

The latest medical and healthcare industry trends
In addition, Frost & Sullivan, a business consulting firm involved in market research and analysis, growth strategy consulting and corporate training across multiple industries, will be sharing their expertise on medical industry trends and predictions. Joint Commission International will provide details on the JCI accreditation standards, whilst the Thai Medical Device Technology Industry Association will explore "Challenges and opportunities in Thailand's medical device industry".
